Description

The Coach and Horses Public House is a public house dating from the late 18th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century and again in the early or mid-20th century. It is constructed from dressed and faced granite, laid to course, with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, lintels, and a first-floor sill string. The roof is made of slurried scantle slate, featuring a lower-pitched outshut at the rear. There are rendered brick chimneys over the gable ends and over the left side of the middle cross wall, which was originally a gable end. The rear wing has a hipped roof covered in scantle slate and two large rendered axial stacks.

The original layout includes two nearly equal front rooms that were originally separated by a cross passage, which is now one room. The right-hand room is slightly wider, with shallow service rooms behind, possibly part of an integral outshut. The building was extended at the left end to include two additional rooms, likely originally for stables and accommodation, and in the early to mid-20th century, a large double-depth wing was added at right angles to the rear of the right-hand end.

The building is two storeys high and has an overall seven-window front, with the original nearly symmetrical five-window front on the right and a 19th-century two-window rendered front on the left. The original front remains virtually unaltered. There is a doorway slightly left of the middle, featuring a distyle Tuscan wooden porch that has been glazed in the 20th century, and 16-pane hornless sashes that may be original or from the early to mid-19th century. The left side has three ground floor doorways with windows in between; the central window was likely originally a doorway leading to a rear courtyard and between two similarly fronted cottages. The left side features 20th-century windows and doors, and behind this section is a lean-to with a round-on-plan chimney. The rear wing is slate-hung and has original 16-pane sashes.

Inside, the building has been much altered in the 20th century but retains two original granite gable end fireplaces, one at each end. The left-hand fireplace has a granite milestone built into the original lintel, inscribed with "FROM HELSTON 1."
