Description
Cobble Close and Lexden is a house, now divided into two houses, likely built in the early 18th century with later alterations in the 18th century. It has been divided, reunited, and divided again in the 19th century, with additional changes made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble and rendered, topped with a slate roof featuring gable end stacks. It has cast iron railings.
Originally, the house had two front rooms and a central entrance in a double depth plan. The central entrance is now located to the right for Cobble Close, while the entrance for Lexden is on the left side. The structure has three storeys above a basement, with two windows on the front. The ground floor features a plate-glass sash window on the left and a 20th-century window on the right, along with a central panelled and glazed door that has an overlight with Gothic glazing. The first floor includes a plate-glass sash and a 16-pane sash window, while the second floor has a two-light casement, two 4-pane sashes, and a 12-pane sash. There is a reeded cornice with modillions on the left side.
Attached to the front left is a range of cast iron railings, leading down a ramped flight of 12 granite steps, with a cast iron gate at the bottom featuring a Greek key panel at the mid rail. The basement has a 6-pane sash window and a door on the left side.
On the left side, there is a two-storey rear wing, which has a plate-glass sash window at both the ground and first floors on the left, as well as a 20th-century door and a 4-pane sash window in the rear wing.
The interior of Cobble Close includes an entrance to a passage with a dog-leg stair featuring stick balusters leading to the rear. There is a partition wall to the right with vertical fielded panelling. The front room has a moulded plaster cornice and panelled lower doors that remain from cupboards on either side of a 20th-century fireplace. The interior of Lexden has not been inspected.
