Description
This is a range of garden walls located to the north of Retainers' Court, possibly dating from the 16th century in the western section, with extensions from the 18th century and repairs made in the 20th century. The walls are constructed from slatestone rubble with granite dressings.
The first range extends approximately 60 meters to the north, while a second range, about 60 meters long, runs to the west and includes a gardener's shed attached to its north side. There is also a third range extending about 100 meters to the west, likely added in the 18th century, which returns along the eastern side of the garden surrounding the house.
The first range is about 2 meters high and features a gateway to the south with a 19th-century granite surround and a segmental arch. There is another granite gateway with a segmental arch located towards the middle of this range. At the northern end, the wall has slate coping over a granite doorway, which also has a segmental arch and a 20th-century door in the Chinese Chippendale style. The western range has a lean-to gardener's shed on its north side, and the eastern wall features slatestone battlements that continue along part of the southern return.
