Description
The Chapel of St George and St Thomas a Becket is a Grade II* chapel built around 1490 by Sir Richard Edgcumbe to commemorate his escape from Sir Henry Trenowth of Bodrugan in 1483. It underwent restoration in the 20th century. The chapel is constructed from slatestone rubble with granite dressings and has a 20th-century slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends, which includes some reused hand-made crested ridge tiles.
The chapel has a small rectangular single cell layout, with the entrance located at the front gable end and the ritual east at the rear gable end. It is situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking the River Tamar. The front gable end features a 3-centred arched granite doorway with roll-mouldings and recessed spandrels, and a 19th-century door with cover strips. Each side has a 2-light granite window with chamfered 3-centred arches, and lattice glazing pintles that remain from shutters. The rear gable end includes a 3-light granite window that is hollow-chamfered, with 4-centred arched lights adorned with carved leaves in the spandrels, semi-circular tracery above, and a 4-centred arch with a mutilated hood mould and pintles from shutters. The interior is not accessible.
