ST EVAN ARDENSAWAH SW 32 SE 7/183 Former house and adjoining farm - buildings immediately north of Ardensawah Farmhouse GV II Former house and adjoining farm buildings. C17, remodelled and extended in the C19. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Scantle slate and dry Delabole slate roofs with gable ends. Plan: Large irregular plan. Main (SW-NE) range has former probably 3-room or longer (now 1 room) house on the right; a barn in the middle with central threshing floor approached by stone steps at rear; a lower probably shippon remodelled from possibly approached by on the left, returning with a short cartshed wing in front at far left; a single-storey probably shippon in front of this wing and another single storey wing behind an outshut behind the right-hand side of the barn and a single- storey stables at right angles in front of the C17 former house. The rear wall of the house continues across the back of the barn and is probably of the same build as the building left of the barn. Exterior: Mostly 2 storeys. Virtually unaltered elevations with mostly C19 openings but some C17 and C18 openings and some reused C17 masonry to some of the C19 openings. South east front of principal range has central mostly C19 barn flanked by probably C17 building on the left (heightened and remodelled in the C19) and C17 former house on the right. The house has 4 altered doorways to the ground floor and old (probably C18) window opening (with C19 shutters) over the left of middle doorway and another similar but blocked opening over the left-hand doorway. At the right hand end of the house (at front and rear) are 2 granite kneeler stones with scrolled ends reset so that they project at the end. Rear of the house has C17 chamfered doorway in situ (towards the right) and a C17 mid-floor (possibly former stair) window on its right. Barn has unaltered symmetrical 2 window front with central doorway and loading doorway over. Building on the left has 2 chamfered jambstones to lower part of its front doorway and a chamfered lintel. Rear wall is buttressed and has a doorway with reused chamfered lintel. Interior not inspected.
