Description
West Penrest is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the mid-17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features roughly coursed slate-stone and has a slate roof. It has a three-unit through-passage plan with extensions at the rear and stands two storeys tall.
On the first floor, there are four 19th-century casement windows positioned directly below the eaves, along with an infilled opening above the doorway. Most of the casements have two lights, except for one that has three lights, and there is a raised eaves line above to the right of the center. The casements have L-hinges, except for the leftmost one, which has H-L hinges.
The ground floor includes a glazing bar sash window to the left, followed by a six-panel door (with the top panels glazed) that is sheltered by a lean-to hood. Next to the door is a casement with L-hinges, a horned sash window, and another casement with L-hinges. All windows, except the casement immediately to the right of the entrance, have wooden lintels.
To the right of the entrance is a granite ridge stack with a slate drip, and to the left is an external end stack with a slate drip and a red brick top. At the rear, there is a tall hip-roofed projection on the left that abuts an integral lateral stack with a red brick shaft on the back wall of the main range. There is also a gabled range at right angles to the right, running parallel with a lean-to at the rear of the main range.
The interior was not accessible during the last survey in December 1987, but it is reported to have chamfered ceiling beams and inglenook fireplaces.
