Description
East Penrest is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building, with later additions and alterations. The exterior features painted roughly coursed slate-stone on the left end and a graded slate roof that is half-hipped on the left side. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high, with a symmetrical arrangement of windows: one narrow central section that slightly projects, flanked by two sections. The windows include 19th-century casements directly below the eaves and a 16-paned glazing bar sash on the lower right.
At the centre, there is a gabled porch with a small window at the front and a doorway on the side, which contains a four-panel inner door with a glazed panel at the top. There is a rendered ridge stack immediately to the left and an external end stack on the right with slate drips. The rear of the building has a two-storey full-length catslide outshut, featuring a stepped external lateral stack on the left side of the back wall. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to attached to the left end of the main range.
Inside, the central hall has a slate floor that has been partly replaced by 19th-century clay tiles. There is an oak-studded light partition wall to the right, and the inglenook fireplaces have been infilled. The roof structure appears to date from the 18th century.
