Description
Newton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of roughly coursed slate-stone, with slate-hung sections on the front and partially on the gable ends, topped by a slate roof. The building has two storeys and features a three-window front. On the first floor, there are glazing bar sashes, with 16 panes on the left and paired sashes on the left side of the ground floor. The upper right has a late 20th-century casement window, while the lower right has a three-light window with a left-hinged casement in the centre, all fitted with slate cills. A central six-panel door is located under a flat-roofed open porch.
To the left, there is an integral end stack that was rebuilt in the late 20th century, and to the right, a prominent rendered external end stack features a cloam oven projection at its base. The 19th-century kitchen range wraps around the right gable end and includes a semi-circular cloam oven projection at the base of the integral end stack. At the rear of the main range, there is a full-length two-storey catslide outshut that has a tall 18-paned glazing bar sash window providing light to the staircase.
Inside, a central cross-passage leads to a 19th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters. The interior features several plank doors, some fitted with H-hinges and others with fleur-de-lys pointed strap hinges, including a door to the dairy located in the left corner of the outshut. The dairy includes slate shelves.
