Pair Of Cottages 150 Metres To North Of Little Larnick And Garden Wall To Front

This pair of cottages, located 150 meters north of Little Larnick, likely dates from the mid to late 18th century, with the right-hand range rebuilt in the mid 19th century. They are constructed of stone rubble, with the left-hand cottage rendered. The right-hand cottage features an asbestos slate roof with gabled ends and large stone rubble chimney stacks at the gables. It also has 19th-century stone rubble shafts with moulded strings and a cloam oven projection on the right gable end. The left-hand cottage has a rag slate roof with a half-hipped left end and a catslide roof that extends over an outshut on the left side. This outshut includes a rendered rear lateral chimney stack.

The cottages have been remodeled to form two separate homes. The right-hand cottage consists of two rooms with a central cross passage and a small dairy at the rear of the left side, with an outshut added to the middle rear. They are two stories tall with an asymmetrical four-window front. The mid-19th-century windows are two-light ovolo-moulded mullions with 20th-century casements. The remodeled right-hand cottage has a symmetrical two-window front, featuring two two-light casements beneath slate hoods, flanking a 20th-century plank door in an open rendered porch with a high gabled roof. Above, there are two two-light casements with brick dressings and timber lintels.

To the left, the asymmetrical one-window range includes a 20th-century plank door within an open porch similar to the right-hand range. There is a two-light casement to the right beneath a slate hood and a two-light window above, placed asymmetrically. The outshut has an additional entrance on the ground floor beneath a 19th-century stone rubble lean-to porch, with a two-light casement above featuring a slate string.

On the rear elevation, there is a straight joint between the remodeled range and the higher end, as well as between the higher range and the outshut. Both ranges have slightly chamfered ceiling beams and a 20th-century chimney piece in the lower gable end. The interior is not accessible, but an internal inspection may provide further details about the layout of these cottages. A stone rubble garden wall is present at the front.
