Description
North Muchlarnick is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with extensions added in the early 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, covered by a scantle slate roof with hipped ends. Two rear projecting wings, also with hipped ends, are present. The building has chimney stacks of stone rubble on the hipped ends; one taller stack has a removed shaft and a projection for a cloam oven, while the lower one has a brick shaft.
Originally a two-room and through-passage plan, the farmhouse was extended in the early 18th century with a heated wing projecting from the higher end and an unheated wing – likely a dairy – from the lower end, creating an overall ‘U’ shape. In the mid-19th century, a stair projection was inserted to the rear of the through passage, filling the space between the rear wings, resulting in a double-depth plan. Both rear wings project slightly from the stair projection.
The front of the building is symmetrical, with a three-window arrangement. The ground floor features two 19th-century two-light casement windows, both beneath timber lintels, and a stone rubble porch with a slate lean-to roof. A four-panel door is set within the porch. Above are three 19th-century two-light, centre-hung casement windows.
Inside, the wide through passage has been retained. The lower room has a plastered ceiling, while the higher room features fairly slight chamfered ceiling beams. The higher gable end has a 19th-century chimney piece with a Cornish range made by Biscombes of Callington; the lower gable end has a 20th-century chimney piece. A dairy is situated within the unheated rear wing, and a 19th-century segmental brick arch forms the fireplace in the heated rear wing. A 19th-century stair is located in the stair projection to the rear. The first floor has likely reset light plank and muntin screens dividing bedrooms and passage; the muntins are chamfered and the planks are fielded on one side. A sole plate has been replaced. The roof of the main range has four trusses, with chamfered and halved principals lapped and pegged at the apex, chamfered and halved collars pegged into the principals, trenched purlins, and carpenters marks. The roof timbers are similar in the rear wings. The four elevations and interior of North Muchlarnick are notably unspoilt.
