Description
Hall Barton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely has origins in the 18th century and was extended and remodeled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with some reused dressed granite from an earlier house. The front elevation features a stone rubble plinth and is slate-hung above the base. The roof is made of cement-washed scantle slate with gable ends and includes at least two early crested ridge tiles. There are projecting stone rubble chimney stacks on the gable ends, along with an additional projecting stone rubble kitchen chimney stack on the rear slope of the lower left-hand gable end.
The farmhouse has a double-depth plan, with the principal rooms located on either side of a central entrance hall. It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front. The ground floor features two tripartite sash windows flanking a 20th-century central glazed porch set on a brick base, which has a hipped slate roof. Inside, there is a 19th-century panelled inner door with panelled reveals. The first floor has two tripartite sashes flanking a central 16-pane sash window.
The rear elevation is asymmetrical and includes 19th-century two-light casements beneath brick segmental arches. There is a rear entrance in an outshut that projects from the lower kitchen end. Much of the dressed granite from the earlier manor house, known as La Halle, can be found in the surrounding outbuildings and yard. The manor and advowson of Pelynt were given to the monastic house of Newenham in 1247. As the Dissolution approached, La Halle was granted by the monks to William Achym.
