PELYNT

1043/0/10002 SHUTE HILL 25-APR-08 War Memorial in the Churchyard of St N onna's Church

GV II War memorial. Circa 1920. Rough hewn granite stone cross and shaft upon a rectangular plinth. The cross head is in the style of a Celtic cross, decorated with interlace; the east side of the shaft has a carved wreath in relief. The inscriptions on the east face of the shaft and the plinth are in black painted lettering and read as follows: "LEST/ WE/ FORGET/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THESE MEN OF PELYNT/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ (NAMES)". The south face carries the inscription "AND/ OTHER/ CONFLICTS" on the shaft, and "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY (NAMES)" on the plinth.

HISTORY: The war memorial was erected within the churchyard to commemorate the fourteen men of the village who died in World War I. The dedication service was held on 29th June 1920 and conducted by the Vicar Rev. Canon Grigson who had sadly lost three of his seven sons in the war (the youngest was the writer, Geoffrey Grigson). A separate inscription was added on the south face in September 2007 to record the three men who died in World War II.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION DECISION The war memorial in St Nonna's Churchyard, Pelynt is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * It is a modest but eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on this community * Honouring the war dead of the village, the memorial has strong historic and cultural significance * It has group value with the adjacent church, which is listed at Grade I.
