Description

The war memorial in the churchyard of St Nonna's Church is a stone cross erected around 1920 to honor the fourteen men from the village of Pelynt who died in World War I. It features a rough-hewn granite stone cross and shaft set on a rectangular plinth. The cross head is designed in the style of a Celtic cross, adorned with interlace patterns. On the east side of the shaft, there is a carved wreath in relief. The inscriptions on the east face of the shaft and the plinth are in black painted lettering, stating: "LEST/ WE/ FORGET/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THESE MEN OF PELYNT/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ (NAMES)". The south face includes the inscription "AND/ OTHER/ CONFLICTS" on the shaft and "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY (NAMES)" on the plinth.

The memorial was dedicated on 29th June 1920 by Rev. Canon Grigson, the village vicar, who had lost three of his seven sons in the war, including the writer Geoffrey Grigson. In September 2007, an additional inscription was added on the south face to commemorate three men who died in World War II. This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of war on the local community and holds significant historical and cultural value, especially in relation to the adjacent Grade I listed church.
