Description
Hillhead is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with a scantle slate roof that is hipped at the lower left end and gabled at the right. A large, rendered stone chimney stack projects from the right-hand, higher end, featuring set-offs and a clay oven projection. The original plan likely comprised two rooms and a through passage, with the kitchen heated by a stack in the larger room at the higher end on the right, and an unheated parlour at the lower end on the left. A later lean-to outbuilding has been added at the lower end. The front façade has a regular two-window arrangement, with the entrance centrally placed to the left. The ground floor contains two late 19th-century casement windows beneath timber lintels. A 20th-century part-glazed door is set within an open-rendered brick porch, which has a corrugated iron lean-to roof. Above, there are two late 19th-century casement windows. A lean-to adjoins the left-hand gable end. The interior has not been inspected. Hillhead represents a good example of a small, largely unaltered house with a two-room plan.
