Description

New England Cottages are a pair of adjoining cottages from the early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. They are constructed from unrendered stone rubble and feature slate roofs, which have gable end brick stacks and a central lateral brick stack at the rear.

Originally, these cottages were likely built as a symmetrical pair with a two-room central staircase plan. The left cottage was later extended by incorporating the front left-hand room of the adjoining cottage. The right-hand cottage includes a two-storey gable-ended rear service range, while the left-hand cottage has a smaller two-storey service range that projects beyond the front range on both sides, with a slated outshut situated between the two service ranges.

The cottages are two storeys high and have a four-window range, with all windows being 19th-century two-light casements that include margin glazing bars. Each cottage features a trellised timber porch with a gabled slate roof and a plank door. The left cottage has two windows, one of which has a timber lintel and flanks the left-hand porch. The right-hand porch has a blocked window to the left with stone voussoirs and a two-light window to the right. A brief inspection of the interior indicated that the 19th-century joinery is mostly intact.
