Description

Glebe House, formerly the Rectory, dates from around 1825. It is faced with stucco and has slate roofs with semi-circular ends and deep eaves. The house has a symmetrical plan, featuring a central entrance and staircase hall, with a principal front room on each side, each having semi-circular ends. At the rear, a parallel service range also has identical semi-circular ends and is connected to the front range by a shallow block.

The building is two storeys high with an attic storey and consists of three symmetrical bays flanked by channelled pilasters. A central semi-circular Doric porch with fluted columns supports an entablature. The entrance features a six-panelled door with a fanlight that has radiating ribs. The fenestration is largely intact, with tall sash windows on the ground floor, their sills nearly at ground level, featuring six over nine panes, and smaller twelve-pane windows on the first floor. The return walls on the right and left sides are semi-circular with two windows, as are the ends of the rear service range.

Inside, there is a fine geometrical staircase at the rear of the entrance hall, with a wreathed handrail supported by delicate wrought iron balustrading. The ceiling of the entrance hall is vaulted, springing from channelled pilasters. The doorcases are reeded with paterae at the top corners, and decorative plaster cornices adorn the principal rooms, with the right-hand room retaining a central plasterwork rose and elaborately carved pelmets. The chimneypieces have been replaced. Overall, Glebe House is a largely intact example of Regency-style architecture.
