Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church dating from the 13th to 19th centuries. Surviving fabric from the 13th century includes the tower, a lancet window at the base of the chancel, and a lancet on the south wall between the east end and the termination of the south aisle. A blocked 13th-century opening exists on the nave's north wall. The church was extensively remodelled in the late 15th century with the addition of a south aisle. It underwent 19th-century refenestration and a major restoration in 1886-7.

The building is constructed of rubble masonry with a slate roof. The tower, situated in the position of the north transept, has access to the nave via an unmoulded 13th-century pointed arch. It features three two-light belfry openings, a single light on the south wall, all partially blocked, with flat pointed arches and slate louvers. Above the eastern opening are two stone insets with an encircled cross and dotted quadrants. A small 1671 datestone on the first stage of the east wall may indicate repairs and alterations following a Civil War skirmish. The tower is topped with embattled parapets. The south porch was heavily rebuilt. It contains a round-headed arch with a hood mould supported on Pevsner A-type piers, one capital carved with a hunting scene and the other with leaf and shield decorations. The C19 restored porch roof incorporates reused timbers. A sundial dated 1709 is also present. A pointed, chamfered south doorway provides access to the church.

The nave and chancel south arcade has five continuous bays with Perpendicular flat pointed arches, supported by Pevsner B-type piers; the easternmost pier was recut. Of the capitals, two feature leaf and shield decorations, followed by a sporting scene, fern and shield decorations, and finally two with leaf and shield decorations. The south aisle, nave and chancel have heavily restored uncoiled waggon roofs incorporating reused timbers and plain chamfered ribs. Other features of the south aisle include a plain piscina and a squint at the eastern end of the arcade. The carved rood screen from the 16th century was heavily restored in 1925. The marble font and its cover sit on richly carved late 16th-century columns, hexagonal with medallions, foliage, and ogee arches. The east window is by Kempe, dated 1898. The south aisle alter utilizes ornately carved timber from a former mansion pew. Royal arms, badly damaged, are on the west wall of the tower. The church also includes C19 seating and an Early 18th century panelled pulpit. Monuments include a stone wall tablet to Elizabeth Pine (died 1679) on the north wall of the chancel. Further monuments in the south aisle commemorate Edward Pine (died 1663) and Richard and Walter Hey (died 1594 and 1629).
