Description

The former Chapel of Ease, now a museum, consists of a pair of mortuary chapels located in a cemetery, likely one for the Church of England and the other for Non-Conformists. Built around the late 19th century, the chapels are constructed of Killas stone with granite dressings and feature a concrete tile gabled roof.

The buildings are identical and rectangular in shape, each with an open porch at the front and a shared central stone porch at the rear. They exhibit Gothic style characteristics. The single-storey chapels have unaltered elevations. The east-facing road front showcases two cross gables, each with a central four-centred arched doorway. The original ledged and braced doors are adorned with ornate iron strap hinges, and the open porches feature scissor-braced gables with cross-braced and arch-braced sides. All gables, except for the right-hand one, retain their original cusped bargeboards. In the middle, there are pointed arched windows, all framed in oak with reeded glass. The rear includes a central gable-ended porch and a three-light stepped mullion window for each cross gable.

At the front, there is a wide gateway flanked by square granite piers with plinths and pyramidal caps. The original wrought-iron gates feature cross bracing under the lock rails and ramped top rails. The walls adjoining the sides are faced with roughly squared coursed granite. The interior has not been inspected.
