Description
The lych gate, walls, horse trough, and mounting block located north of the Church of St Martin in Liskeard are notable features from the late 19th century. The lych gate itself dates from this period, while the adjoining walls are likely from the 18th century and later. The mounting block is probably from the early 19th century, and the horse trough was installed in 1893.
Constructed from slatestone rubble with some granite dressings, the lych gate has a dry Delabole slate roof, shaped oak barge boards, and crested clay ridge tiles. It is rectangular in shape with serpentine walls connecting it to the path leading to the church. The lych gate has open front and rear sections, featuring four-centred arched oak doorways with carved spandrels. The front includes a pair of square gate piers and mid-19th century iron gates, along with paired vents at the gable ends.
Inside, there is likely an 18th-century coffin rest flanked by granite grid stiles and benches, topped with an oak waggon roof. Additional features include three steps on three sides leading up to a tapered landing in front of the lych gate. To the left, there are two steps leading up to the mounting block, which is built against an older churchyard wall. On the right, a later wall topped with iron railings is present, and to the left of the mounting block, there is a granite horse trough inscribed with: "PRESENTED TO THE BOROUGH BY A LOVER OF ANIMALS."
