Description
A First World War memorial cross with later Second World War additions.
MATERIALS: constructed of granite.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial sits on a concrete base within a wider tarmac area surrounded by later railings outside the memorial hall and it comprises a roughhewn Latin cross with an incised cross at the centre of the head and running down the shaft. The shaft rises from a two stepped granite plinth. There is a smoothed panel at the base of the shaft which carries the first of the names.
INSCRIPTION: the top section of the plinth reads: IN HONOURED AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”. On the second section of the plinth are the names of the fallen from Second World War preceded by 1939 – 1945.
The metal railings surrounding the memorial, installed in 2006, are excluded from the listing.
