Description

The Limekiln, dating from around the mid-19th century, is a disused structure located in Moorswater, Liskeard. It is built from rubblestone and features cut stone round arches at the openings on the front, northeast, and sides on the northwest and southeast. The building has a flat top and a rectangular plan, with the East Looe River running behind it. The openings leading into two cylindrical chambers have deeply splayed reveals, although these chamber openings are currently blocked. A rubblestone dividing wall at the rear appears to be a later addition. The entrance is located on the right side, and there is a partition for machinery, including a water wheel at the back. The remains of an undershot water wheel and the gear that drove a winch are still present; this winch was used to haul wagons containing limestone and culm up a tramroad incline to the top of the limekiln. The winch features a friction drive, and there are remnants of a brake and part of the wheel. At the time of inspection, the site was heavily overgrown.
