Description

Laity Farmhouse is probably from the early 19th century, although it likely incorporates earlier fabric. The farmhouse is built with rendered walls, probably on uncoursed rubble with a granite plinth, and has a slurried slate roof and brick chimneys. It has a rectangular, double-depth plan. The two-storey, five-bay facade is raised on a low plinth, with a doorway in the fourth bay accessed by five wide steps. The doorway has a plain reveal, a recessed boarded and glazed door, and a shallow four-pane overlight. There are four 16-pane sash windows on each floor, with plain reveals and raised sills. The roof is hipped with projecting eaves, and there’s a ridge chimney between the first and second bays, and a gable chimney to the right. Inside, there is a substantial axial chimney stack, approximately 2.5 metres thick, with very large back-to-back fireplaces that are now concealed. A dog-legged staircase features an open string, scrolled brackets, stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail with a wreathed curtail.
