Description
The stables and pound house, located 20 metres northwest of Bodgate Farmhouse, date back to the 17th century. They are constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof featuring hipped and half-hipped ends, with the higher range on the right. The building has an overall rectangular plan, with the ground sloping down to the left. The pound house is situated on the left, while the stable with a hay-loft above is on the right, separated by a thick cob cross wall.
The exterior presents a long, low two-storey range, with the pound house having a slightly lower roof. There is an 18th-century door leading into the pound house on the left and a 19th-century plank door to the shippon on the right, which is flanked by two window openings. To the right, there is a single-light early 18th-century casement window with thick, heavy glazing bars. A plank door provides access to the loft in the right-hand side wall.
Inside, the pound house features heavy chamfered floor joists, some of which have roughly cut run-out stops. The roof structure consists of an A-frame with principals and collars that are halved, lap-jointed, and pegged, along with a complete apple press. The stables contain heavy, roughly chamfered main beams and roughly cut joists, although the roof structure was not inspected. This building is part of an unaltered group that includes the shippon and Bodgate Farmhouse.
