Description

The obelisk in the Admiralty Playing Fields is a monument dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is made of Portland stone with scored ashlar and features a granite base to the plinth. The plinth has a moulded base and a square plan, supporting a square plan obelisk that stands about 10 metres tall. This obelisk is often called a monument to Cupid, the pet pig of Emma, Countess of Mount Edgcumbe; however, it was built before the pig's death. An obelisk or similar marker has been depicted on Admiralty charts since around 1690, although the current structure is not from the 17th century.
