Description
Batters Engine House is a pumping beam engine house for a former lead mine, part of West Chiverton Mine, built around 1868-1869. It is constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings. The building features brick arches with granite keyblocks over the openings, and the upper part of the chimney is made of brick. The engine house has a rectangular plan with a round chimney located in the middle of the rear wall and a cataract pit at the front. There are no surviving wooden floors or roof structure. It was originally fitted with an 80-inch engine built by Harveys of Hayle, which was later moved to another mine.
The exterior of the building has three storeys and retains unaltered elevations with round arches over the openings. The front wall has a central doorway, while the rear gable end wall features a central round stack, which is an unusual characteristic. The right-hand wall includes a large central cylinder doorway, which is typically found in the middle of the rear wall, flanked by two smaller doorways, two first-floor window openings, and one central second-floor window opening. The left-hand wall mirrors the right-hand side above the basement level, with two small basement openings and a doorway on the right.
