Description

Sithney Trough, also known as Sithney General Stores, is a small house dating from the early 19th century, with an attached cottage that may have originally been a shippon. The building is constructed from roughly coursed killas rubble, featuring dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and ground floor lintels, along with slate sills and some wooden lintels. It has an asbestos slate roof with rendered chimneys at the gable ends. The layout consists of a two-room house with a central lobby and stair, and a one-room cottage addition on the left, which likely served as a shippon, evidenced by a former loading doorway now positioned as a first-floor window.

The structure is two storeys high and presents a three-window front: the original symmetrical two-window arrangement with a central doorway, and the one-window cottage to the left, which has a doorway on its right. The house features 20th-century ledged doors and old 12-pane horizontal sliding sash windows, likely original to the house. A painted advertisement mural is located on the left gable end. The front wall is made of rubble and earth, enclosing a shallow rectangular area in front of the house. A gateway leads from the road, framed by roughly-hewn granite monolithic piers and a wrought iron gate from the early 19th century, which has arrowhead finials and closely set bars at the bottom. This building is one of the few unspoiled small houses facing a main road in this part of Cornwall.
