Description
The building known as Hull at No.1 Loscombe Farm Cottages is a Grade II listed structure. It is primarily constructed of granite, with the subterranean parts carved from softer granite. Above ground, the hull appears as a rectangular mound oriented from north-west to south-east. Below ground, it features an irregular layout that includes a central passage and four side chambers.
The exterior of the entrance mound is characterized by battered retaining walls made of random stone rubble. The entrance is situated on the south-west side and is topped with a granite lintel.
Inside, a steep flight of eleven granite steps leads down from the entrance to the hull's floor. The walls of the staircase are made of granite blocks, and the roof is supported by large granite lintels. Granite jambs, which have drill holes, and a lintel at the base of the steps indicate the location of a former doorway. The central passage extends approximately 10 meters to the north-east and features niches in the walls for candles. Off this passage, at roughly right angles, are four irregular side chambers. At the far end of the hull, the passage widens to create a fifth chamber. The interiors of the chambers vary, with some having straight sides and others featuring irregular curves.
