Description
Forest Farm Cross is a medieval wheel-headed cross made of granite, now positioned as the eastern side of a field gateway. The west-facing side features a faint Maltese cross within a bead. The cross stands 1.25 meters high, with the head measuring 0.43 meters wide, tapering to 0.30 meters at the base. There are at least six horizontal grooves cut into the shaft, which may represent an ogham inscription, although these could be of more recent origin.
While specific historical details about this cross are not available, it shows signs of having been reused as a gatepost multiple times, indicated by at least three small holes in its face. The cross's crude and worn appearance suggests it may date back to the Early Christian period.
Crosses like this one often served as boundary or route markers, acting as devotional reminders to encourage piety among passersby. Although it is not in its original location and shows some wear, the Forest Farm Cross is a notable example of a wheel-headed cross that is at least medieval in date. The potential ogham inscription adds to its significance, suggesting an even earlier origin.
