Description
This is a mid-19th century threshing barn that also includes a wagon shed and stables, along with the remains of an attached water-powered engine house. It is located approximately 25 metres north of Tremabe Farmhouse, which is not included in this listing. The barn features mixed rubble walls made from slatestone, granite, and elvan, with some granite dressings. The roof is made of rag slate, cement-grouted at the front, and topped with red clay ridge tiles, including one reused 17th-century hand-made crested tile.
The barn has a rectangular plan that is slightly deeper at the rear on the left side and includes the remnants of the later engine house behind the left-hand side. Inside, there is a threshing floor located to the left of the centre, and the barn is built into the bank on the left. It has two storeys and a two-window range at the front. The threshing doorway is positioned left of the middle, with a slit ventilator and pigeon holes on the left side, and two windows on the right, all featuring ventilated heads. The threshing doorway, along with one on the opposite rear wall and a similar doorway at the left-hand end wall, has slate hoods supported by wooden corbels and original planked doors, with the right-hand doors divided for ventilation control.
On the ground floor, there is a wide central doorway with a shouldered head, flanked by smaller doors on the left and far right, all of which are chamfered. The engine house is roofless, and its walls are partly collapsed, featuring a very wide doorway on the left. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to retain its original floors and roof structure, making it a finely-crafted example of its type.
