Description
The Open Water Conduit on Godolphin Road is a Grade II listed structure made of dressed and plain granite revetments and bridges, all set at pavement level. The channel base consists of granite, shale, or cobbles, with iron grates present.
The design of this extensive water system is influenced by the town's topography. It is fed by the diverted River Cober, located approximately 2 kilometers to the north, and ultimately returns to the river to the south of the town. Most of the system is underground, with exposed channels only along the main roads in the town center.
The conduit runs along the south side of Godolphin Road, featuring narrow, tall revetment blocks. There are several granite and concrete bridges that provide vehicular access to nearby driveways. The water is diverted beneath the road to connect with the conduit on Penrose Road. Notably, the Godolphin Road conduit is wider and deeper than other sections, reflecting its proximity to the main inlet, and it has generally plain revetments and pavements that are sometimes elevated above the road level.
