Description

Upton Grove is a villa built in the mid to late 19th century, accompanied by an outbuilding located about 2 meters to the north. The front of the villa features rusticated stucco, while the sides are made of painted rubble and some brick is present at the rear. It has a hipped scantle slate roof with slightly projecting eaves, adorned with five alternate crested and pierced clay tiles along the ridge. There are rendered brick chimneys on the side walls and an additional chimney on the rear wall.

The villa has a symmetrical four-room double-depth layout, with the main rooms on either side of the entrance hall and service rooms at the back, along with small projecting bays on each side. The south front is symmetrical with two windows, flanked by one-window wings that are set back towards the rear. The central doorway features a pair of top-glazed doors and is sheltered by a contemporary canopy porch or verandah that has a shaped fascia and central gablets, supported by turned cast iron stanchions. The building has a plinth and quoin strips that simulate ashlar. The original hornless sash windows with marginal panes are present on the front, along with original hornless 12-pane sashes on the front of each wing. It also has cast iron ogee gutters.

The interior has not been inspected but is reported to be unaltered. The outbuilding at the rear is constructed of painted rubble and has a scantle slate roof, featuring doorways and small ventilator windows. It is rectangular in shape and built into the bank at the rear. Upton Grove is noted for being an unusual single-storey 19th-century house in remarkably unaltered condition.
