Description

A row of three houses located on Battery Mill Lane, St Erth, likely dating to the late 18th century and probably serving as a count house and managers’ houses for a former copper rolling mill. The houses are constructed of painted copper slag blocks, with some sections rendered. The roofs are of dry Delabole slate, partially grouted, with projecting eaves to the front. Brick chimneys are situated over the gable ends and cross party walls. Cast iron gutters are of ogee section.

The plan is double depth, with each house featuring two reception rooms at the front and service rooms and stairs at the rear, all contained under one roof. The left-hand house (number 3) has an entrance hall behind the left-hand reception room; the other two houses have central entrance halls positioned between their front rooms. Later wings have been added to the rear of the left and right-hand properties.

The east front is two storeys high and approximately eight windows wide. Number 1 (the right-hand house) presents a symmetrical two-window front with a central doorway. Number 2 has a symmetrical three-window front, also with a central doorway, and a blind window above. Number 3 has a slightly irregular three-window front, with two ground floor windows and no front doorway. Original four-panel doors with overlights are found at the central doorway. Number 3 has original 16-pane hornless sash windows with internal shutters to the ground floor, and circa late 19th century 12-pane horned sashes to the first floor. The other houses have later 19th or 20th century four-pane horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
