Description

Sconner House is a house, now an inn, dating to around 1820, with later alterations. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a slate roof, hipped at the right end and gable ended to the left, although the stacks have been removed. The building follows a double-depth plan, featuring a central hall with a stairwell to the left. Principal rooms face the garden to the rear, with one room to the right. A mid-19th-century two-room plan addition was added to the left.

The symmetrical five-bay front has two storeys over a basement. The central three bays project slightly under a pediment. A flat-roofed porch is centrally located with panelled pilasters and 12-pane sashes on either side, a dentil string course, a plain frieze, and a cornice. A granite flight of steps leads to a three-panelled door with diamond-glazed sidelights and overlight. Twelve-pane sashes are positioned to the right and left of the porch; the first floor has a central 12-pane sash, a 15-pane sash to the left, and a blind window to the right. Outer bays feature a narrow 12-pane sash at ground floor and a 15-pane sash at first floor. A cill band course and eaves cornice run along the front.

Attached to the left is a mid-19th-century addition of two storeys and two windows, with 12-pane sashes at ground and first floor, a band course, and a basement. The roof is hipped to the left, with a central ridge stack. A door and three windows are present in the basement. The right side displays a 16-pane basement sash, ground and first floor 12-pane sashes, and a band course. The bay to the right is stepped forward, and a 20th-century single-storey conservatory occupies the angle, featuring a casement and a 12-pane sash at first floor. The left side of the 19th-century wing has three 12-pane sashes, some replacements from the 20th century; the basement level corresponds to the ground floor, with two doors and two casements, and band courses.

The garden front showcases pilasters with Greek key decoration. The ground floor has two windows, each with 15-pane sashes, sidelights, and pilasters, topped by a Greek key frieze; the first floor has two 16-pane sashes in plain raised surrounds; three basement windows are present. The wing to the right has two 12-pane sashes at ground and first floor, a 24-pane sash, and a blocked window at basement level.

The interior features a large entrance hall with a tripartite vaulted ceiling, each vault adorned with a central rosette. Door architraves exhibit Greek key decoration, and all doors are six-panelled. The stair hall to the left has a moulded cornice. The open-well stair has a moulded string, a wreathed handrail, and paired turned balusters; the stair curves to the first-floor landing, which is also vaulted with an anthemion cornice. At first floor, the doorway to the front room also features a Greek key architrave, and there are circular internal windows with Greek key surrounds to the right and left. Six-panelled doors are found throughout the first floor. The ground floor's central front pair of rooms were originally joined by a double doorway with panelled jambs, although the doors have been removed. Both rooms have a complete plaster cornice with beading, and windows with panelled jambs and soffits. The room to the right of the entrance hall includes a wooden chimneypiece with a fluted frieze and beading below the mantel. The room to the left of this has a matching cornice.
