Description
This pair of cottages, likely dating from the 17th century, is located adjoining the northwest of a butcher's shop on North Hill. They are constructed of stone rubble, with the left-hand cottage rendered on the front. The cottages feature a rag slate roof with gable ends and have stone rubble end stacks, with the left-hand stack projecting.
The original layout of the cottages is uncertain. The left-hand cottage has a one-room plan with an entrance on the right and a room on the left that is heated by an end stack. The right-hand cottage may have a one or two-room plan, with the right-hand room heated by an end stack. The rear elevation and interior were not accessible, so it is unclear if the left-hand room is heated. It is possible that the two cottages were originally part of a single house with a three-room and passage plan.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window front featuring 19th-century and replacement 20th-century windows with glazing bars. The left side has a 20th-century porch and a three-light casement, while the right side has a two-light casement and a three-light casement. There are also three gabled half dormers with two-light and three-light casements. The rear elevation and interior were not accessible for inspection.
