Description

LANDULPH SX 46 SW 6/155 Landulph Methodist Church with attached Sunday School, front wall and railings II Methodist church, with attached Sunday School; front wall with railings. Dated 1874. Devon limestone rubble, with stone dressings and brick dressings; Slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends with bargeboards. Plan: single auditorium plan, with ritual east at the rear; the entrance is through a tower attached to front left. Attached to the rear is the Sunday School. The boundary wall runs along the front and has 2 gateways; surmounted by railings. Exterior: The front gable end has large 3-light window, of three lancets, with the central light taller, with hood mould; circular datestone set in the gable above with inscription; Wesley Church 1874; buttresses. Taller 2-storey tower to left, with diagonal weathered buttresses, pointed arched doorway with double doors and hood mould to front; pointed lancet above with hood mould. Brick cornice and bellcast pyramidal roof with cast iron finial. The left side of the tower has a single plate- glass sash at ground floor and lancet at first floor, and short slated spire. The left and right sides of the auditorium have 2 paired lancets and buttresses. to the rear, the 2-storey Sunday School has 2 plate-glass sashes with triangular heads and brick surrounds, door with overlight to right; 3 similar sashes at first floor. At the right side, there is a projecting wing to rear, probably a vestry, single storey, with paired plate-glass sashes. The right side of the Sunday School has 2 plate- glass sashes at first floor and a single storey lean-to at end right. The front wall is about 20 metres long, in Devon limestone rubble with granite coping, in 3 stepped ranges, with C20 cast iron gate at each end. The wall is surmounted by panels of cast iron railings with trefoil finials. Interior: not inspected.
