Description

North Wayton Farmhouse, likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, has undergone alterations and expansions in the early to mid-19th century, with further changes in later periods. It is constructed primarily of slatestone rubble, with the front face rendered and lined out in stucco. The roof is slate and asbestos slate, hipped with a gable end to the front wing and features two rear lateral stacks in the main range.

Originally a two-room plan, consisting of a hall/kitchen to the left and a smaller parlour to the right, each with a rear lateral stack for heating, the farmhouse was significantly altered. In the early to mid-19th century, a cross wing was added to the left end to create a dairy range with three unheated rooms. A further wing was added to the rear right, again with its own end stack. The rear passage was extended to provide access to this new room, and a straight staircase was inserted into the original passage.

The front facade was made symmetrical, presenting a three-window range in the early 19th century. The ground floor features a central porch supported by wooden posts, a frieze and entablature, a six-panelled door, and a four-light casement window. A brick stack is visible on the inner side of the left front wing, and a 20th-century porch is set in the angle between the main range and the left wing on both ground and first floors. This wing also has a central three-light casement window on the first floor, and a two-light casement with a hood mould on the ground floor. The right end of the front is blind. The rear right wing has a gable end with a brick-shafted stack. The left side of the farmhouse is rendered, with a small brick lean-to and a 20th-century garage attached. The ground floor has two two-light casements, and the first floor has one 20th-century window and two two-light casements. The rear elevation presents a U-plan, featuring an external lateral stack in painted rubble. A 20th-century porch is situated in the angle to the right of the stack, with a two-storey addition housing the staircase to the left, slate-hung with a single casement at ground and first floor. One wing has a two-light casement with a brick segmental head at ground and first floor, while the inner side of the other wing is slate-hung, with a 16-pane sash window on both ground and first floors.

The rooms within the dairy range to the left retain slate floors; the central room has slate shelves and a central slate table. The room to the left of the passage has a rebuilt rear fireplace with an oven to the left. The original passage contains a winder staircase with stick balusters leading to the rear. The room to the right of the passage also features a rebuilt rear fireplace. The remainder of the building was not inspected.
