HELLAND SX 07 SE 1/51 Helland Wesleyan Methodist Church - and attached Sunday School

Methodist church with attached Sunday school. Dated 1878. Coursed slatestone rubble with granite dressings. Slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends ; hipped end roof to the Sunday school, with axial stack with brick shaft. Plan: Single auditorium plan, with entrance through porch at the front gable end and ritual east at the rear gable end. The Sunday school is attached to rear right, forming an L-plan, with the axial stack heating the right end of the Sunday school ; the end bay to right is a coach house. Vestigial Gothic style. Exterior: Front gable end has gabled porch with buttresses and quatrefoil window to front in granite surround ; terracotta finial. Double doors with strap hinges at the right side. Gable end has 2 pointed arched lancets with stained glass margin glazing, circular datestone above with recessed quartrefoil and inscription : Wesleyan Methodist Church 1878. Right side has one similar window, left side has 2 paired similar windows and buttress to right and left. Rear has 2 similar windows, recessed blind circle above. Sunday school has porch set in the angle to the church, with buttress and double doors. 2 paired plate-glass sashes with shouldered heads. The end bay is the coach house, set back to right, with double doors. Rear of the Sunday school is rendered with paired sashes ; parallel single storey range attached to left with stack to rear. Interior: Not inspected.
