Description

Helland Wesleyan Methodist Church and attached Sunday School is a Methodist church built in 1878. It is constructed from coursed slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features a slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. The Sunday school has a hipped end roof and includes an axial stack with a brick shaft. The building has a single auditorium plan, with an entrance through a porch at the front gable end and a ritual east at the rear gable end. The Sunday school is attached to the rear right, forming an L-plan, and has an axial stack heating the right end; the end bay on the right serves as a coach house.

The church exhibits vestigial Gothic style. The front gable end features a gabled porch with buttresses and a quatrefoil window in a granite surround, topped with a terracotta finial. There are double doors with strap hinges on the right side. The gable end has two pointed arched lancets with stained glass margin glazing, and above these is a circular datestone with a recessed quatrefoil and the inscription: "Wesleyan Methodist Church 1878." The right side has one similar window, while the left side has two paired similar windows and buttresses on both sides. The rear has two similar windows with a recessed blind circle above. The Sunday school has a porch set in the angle to the church, featuring a buttress and double doors. It includes two paired plate-glass sashes with shouldered heads, and the end bay serves as the coach house with double doors. The rear of the Sunday school is rendered and has paired sashes, with a single-storey range attached to the left that includes a stack at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
