Description
The Fowey War Memorial is a war memorial cross, along with retaining walls and steps, dating from 1921. It is made of dressed granite.
The memorial cross stands on a three-stepped octagonal base. The tapering rectangular shaft features intricate carvings of Cornish and Stafford knot designs on the front and rear faces, with beading along the limbs. At the top, it is crowned by a wheel-head cross. On the north and south sides of the bottom step, there are stone flower holders set into a paved surface. The eight faces of the top step are inscribed with the following text: "A S/ MCMXIV – MCMXIX/ TO THE GREATER/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY/ OF/ XL MEN OF THIS/ BOROUGH/ WHO BY LAND/ AND SEA/ DYING FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY/ HEIRS OF HER/ SPIRIT NOW/ INHERIT LIFE/ ETERNAL." The middle step bears the inscription "REMEMBER/ (NAMES)" and the lower step is inscribed with "MCMXXXIX – MCMXLV/ (NAMES)." Additionally, a sword is carved in relief on the tread of the east side of the lower step.
The memorial is located in the corner of the churchyard, surrounded by dressed granite walls and sunken steps that lead to the churchyard wall. The steel railings and entrance gates are of a later date and are noted as not being of special architectural or historic interest.
