Description
The Norton War Memorial is a structure commemorating the First World War and Second World War, built in 1920 by an unknown designer. It is made from Cornish granite and features a cross set on a tapering square base, which stands on three square steps.
Located in the churchyard of the Church of St James the Great, the memorial is designed as a tapering Celtic cross in white Cornish granite, with black lead lettering. The head of the cross is intricately carved with a raised knot work design. On the front, east face, there is a central roundel depicting a pelican feeding its young with its own heart’s blood. The east face of the tapering shaft is adorned with a trailing vine stem that bears leaves and grapes, while the other faces showcase interlaced knot work patterns.
The east face of the tapering base features the inscription: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE / OFFICERS AND MEN / OF THE / PARISH OF NORTON / WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES / IN THE / GREAT EUROPEAN WAR / 1914 – 1919." Below this, it states, "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION." The south face of the base lists the title "OFFICERS" along with three names, and beneath it, "NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS" with four names. The north and west faces bear the names of 16 men who served.
Additionally, a granite wedge has been placed on the east side of the bottom step, inscribed with the words: "WE ALSO REMEMBER WITH GRATITUDE / THOSE WHO FELL BETWEEN 1939 AND 1945 / AND IN SUBSEQUENT CONFLICTS."
