Description

The Old Rectory, now a house, was originally built in the early 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid-18th century and late 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with dressed stone ashlar details, and has a steep-pitched plain tile roof with four stacks—two at the gable ends and two along the ridge. It is arranged in an L-shape.

The exterior features a first-floor band and coped gables. The front has three bays, with a three-window arrangement centred beneath a coped pediment containing an oval window with Gothic glazing bars above. A central moulded stone doorcase with a keystone and hood protects a 19th-century half-glazed door with an overlight. The bays either side have 18-pane sashes with stone surrounds. To the right, there are two 19th-century windows with transoms and stone surrounds. The right gable has an 18-pane sash and a 19th-century canted bay window with a three-light cross-mullioned window below. A 19th-century two-storey porch is set into the rear return angle, with a two-light mullioned window on each floor.

Inside, a 18th-century dogleg wooden staircase rises for four flights, featuring vase and stem balusters. The library contains fielded wall panels, a moulded cornice, ceiling panels with rosettes, a Classical wooden fireplace with a broken pediment displaying a coat of arms, and an overmantel with a portrait bust of Chantrey. There are three fielded six-panel doors, one of which is a dummy. Other main rooms have moulded cornices, and one contains a large, late 19th-century Renaissance Revival fireplace.
