Description
No. 9 South Street is a 17th-century merchant's house located in Fowey. The building features side walls made of killas rubble and a plastered timber-framed front with three jetties, topped by a steep asbestos slate roof that has a gable end facing the street. It has a right-angle plan with the gable oriented towards the street and stands four storeys tall, with the third floor mostly in the roof space. The façade includes a one-window range, with early 19th-century paired 20-pane sash windows on the left side of the first floor, a central 20-pane horned sash window on the second floor, and a two-light casement window above. The ground floor has a 20th-century remodeled shop front featuring a partly-glazed door on the right. At the rear, there is a doorway with a very old overlight that contains bulls-eye panes and lead calms.
Inside, the house retains many original structural features, including chamfered cross beams where visible, a five-bay roof structure with trusses that have curved feet and mortised collars, two garderobes, and a stone newel staircase. Round-arched doorways provide access to these features, all built into the thickness of the right-hand wall. There is also a blocked window opening on the left-hand wall and some 17th-century panelling at the top of the 18th-century dog-leg staircase. This house is a notable example of a surviving 17th-century jetty-tied merchant's house in Cornwall, showcasing many original internal features.
