Description
A group of former coastguard cottages and associated outbuildings dating to the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of painted rubble with granite dressings. They have a gabled roof covered in scantle slate, with wide eaves supported by brackets. Large brick chimneys are positioned over the party walls between the cottages.
The original layout comprised a long, rectangular terrace of three pairs of double-depth cottages, initially sharing a front door for each pair, with a separate cottage at each end. Each cottage originally featured a room at the front and a room at the rear. A single-room-plan wing, set back to the left, was added to the left-hand cottage in the 20th century. To the right of the main range are outbuildings, including former earth closets and a rocket house.
The north front is virtually symmetrical, with eight windows plus the one window of the set-back wing. The ground floor openings are arched with granite. Original panelled doors are located centrally to each pair of cottages, although a later doorway and one to the right-hand side of the wing have been added. Most windows are original 24-pane horizontally-sliding sashes, though the three bays on the left have been replaced with 4-pane horned sashes. The interior remains uninspected.
