Description
The Round House is a capstan house, possibly from the 18th century, which was heightened in the 19th century. It features granite rubble walls at the plinth and ground floor, with granite dressings around the openings. Above this, there is vertically-set tarred weather boarding and a conical roof made of scantle slate. The building has a round plan, with a man-operated capstan (windlass) on the ground floor and former fishermen's stores above, which are now shops. The original or 19th-century machinery, along with the original floors and roof structure, has been preserved since the heightening in the 19th century.
The exterior has two storeys. The ground floor includes a doorway facing north and four other openings that vary in size and placement. The first floor features two doorways with old boarded doors and two window openings with 9-pane fixed lights. Inside, the unaltered interior boasts an 8-barred capstan in remarkable condition, double beams with iron strainers for centering the drum of the windlass, and a king post roof structure with diagonal struts, which support the weight of the roof through struts angled up from the ground floor walls.
