Moorgrove, Including Adjoining Former Coach House And Stable

Moorgrove, including the adjoining former coach house and stables, was built around 1850 as a former dower house for the St Aubyn estate. The building features stuccoed walls and a hipped scantle slate roof, with brick chimneys located on the left-hand side wall and over the axial wall between the right-hand rooms. It has wide eaves with cast-iron ogee gutters. The plan is L-shaped, with an integral lean-to rear porch in the rear angle that includes a bowed stair window above, and the former coach house and stables are attached at an angle to the rear left-hand corner.

The house is two storeys over a basement and has a symmetrical three-window front facing southeast, with a central doorway accessed by two granite steps with moulded nosings. The original six-panel door features an overlight with intersecting glazing bars, and there is a later 19th-century Tuscan porch with a pediment. The windows on this front and the principal openings of other elevations are original Gothic-style sashes with intersecting glazing bars at the heads. The symmetrical two-window garden front facing northeast is flanked by fluted pilasters and has a mid-floor band with an anthemion frieze, while the stair window in the rear angle is bowed.

Inside, the house retains many original features, including an open-well open-string staircase, panelled doors, architraves, and ceiling cornices with trailing bands. The coach house's northeast front has a large ground floor doorway with slate hanging above and two original 12-pane sashes. The former stables on the right feature small paned lights with top openings.
