Description

This barn, built around 1850, is located about 20 metres north of Carkeet Farmhouse in St Cleer. It is constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings and features a half-hipped slate roof with lead rolls on the hips and ridge. The barn has a ground floor that includes a cow-house, built into the bank at the rear, and a loft at the first floor level. At the back, there is a pit for a water-wheel, which was likely powered by water brought through an aqueduct supported by granite piers and a wooden launder. The barn was probably used for threshing and grinding grain.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the ground floor displaying band courses in dressed granite that step down to the left with the slope of the ground. The right end has a door and a 20th-century light, with a 6-pane light above. To the left, there are five bays at a lower level, featuring central double doors, a single door on each side, and ventilation slits on the outer sides. The first floor has a large central double loading door and smaller loading doors on each side, all covered by a slate pentice hood. There is a straight joint to the left leading to a one-storey lean-to addition with a loft, which has a door with a granite lintel on the ground floor and a ventilation slit in the loft. The right side of the barn is built into the bank and has a door leading into the loft. The rear features a door with a pentice hood opposite the main loading door, along with external stone steps. There are two former doors to the left with granite lintels and a ventilation slit at the lower level to the right. The wheel pit, made of larger granite blocks, is located to the left of the door, with the main shaft of the wheel still remaining. A row of three granite monoliths runs along the rear left of the barn, which would have supported the wooden launder.

Although the interior is not accessible, this barn is a notable example of a mid-19th-century barn in a modestly planned farmyard. It faces the farmhouse, and the yard is enclosed by a linhay and a stable. The aqueduct for the waterwheel likely carried water over a considerable distance, as there does not appear to be a nearby water source.
