Description

Higher Draynes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with 19th century and later alterations. It is constructed from painted slatestone and granite rubble, topped with an asbestos slate roof featuring gable ends and ridge tiles, as well as gable end stacks that have granite cornices and shaped tops. The building has a two-room plan, with a central entrance leading to a cross passage. The kitchen is located to the right and the parlour to the left, both of which are heated by gable end stacks. A 19th century staircase has been inserted in the passage, and there is a later outshut, likely from the 19th century, at the rear of the passage and kitchen.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front, featuring all 20th century two-light casements. There is a central gabled porch, with the upper part being slate-hung, a two-light casement at the front, and a plain door on the right side. A string course runs along the first floor. The right side of the building has an external stack with a curved oven at the base, while a single storey outshut with a half-glazed 20th century door is also present. The left side features another external stack. At the rear, the outshut is built into the bank.

Inside, the front right room has a wide fireplace with a timber lintel that was replaced in the 20th century, and an oven is located at the rear left. The room has irregular chamfered beams and a slate floor, along with a cupboard that has a panelled door to the right of the fireplace. The 19th century straight stair in the passage features panelling on the side, and the passage itself was widened to create a small room to the right of the stair.
