Description
The Passmore Edwards Institute, located on Hayle Hayle Terrace in Hayle, was founded in 1893 and officially opened in April 1896 by Mrs. Passmore Edwards, wife of the benefactor. Designed by Silvanus Trevail, it is constructed of dressed granite, granite ashlar, and granite dressings, with a dry Delabole slate roof. The roof is U-shaped, with two pedimented gables at the front, a parapet between them, and hipped ends to the rear, incorporating a brick chimney over the rear right-hand corner.
The building has a rectangular plan with two parallel wings linked at the front by a central entrance and stair hall, and further linked by internal service rooms behind the stair hall. It is designed in a classical style.
The south front is symmetrical, with three bays and a central entrance porch featuring a round-headed doorway. The exterior is mostly rock-faced granite, with rusticated granite ashlar framing the first-floor windows on the left and right, and granite dressings highlighting the architectural details. Original windows and doors remain, including a leaded glazed tympanum over the double doors with patterned panels. The central bay is set back from the wider flanking bays. The parapet above the central bay displays "PASSMORE EDWARDS" in relief and the word "INSTITUTE" on the porch parapet. The side bays have moulded plinths, mid-floor strings, moulded parapet cornices, and triangular pediments. The windows are tripartite, with granite mullions. Ground floor windows have central triangular pediments on consoles attached to the mullions, while the first-floor windows are Venetian-style with round arches and are flanked by pairs of ashlar pilasters. Transomed wooden mullioned windows are set within the granite surrounds. The side elevations feature four windows on each floor, with plinths, mid-floor strings, and moulded eaves cornices that link to the front parapet cornices.
The interior has seen little alteration since construction and retains a fine, original open-well open-string staircase, pitch-pine dado panelling, panelled doors and doorcases, and a large cast-iron Cornish range in the rear right-hand room.
Passmore Edwards, who rose from humble beginnings in Blackwater, Cornwall, became a journalist, lecturer, and Member of Parliament. He is primarily remembered as a benefactor. Hayle Institute is the largest of four such institutes he funded in Cornwall and one of many buildings designed for him by architect Silvanus Trevail.
