Description
No. 20 Dean Street is a town house built in the 18th century and remodelled in the mid to late 19th century, possibly by Henry Rice. The building is constructed from roughly coursed slatestone rubble and features a fairly steep slate roof with brick end stacks. It has projecting eaves supported by modillions over a frieze of consoles. The house has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high, with a symmetrical five-window front. The windows have flat brick arches with projecting keyblocks above, and they are likely mid-19th century 12-pane hornless sashes, with the glazing bars removed from the bottom sashes on the ground floor. The central doorway, which dates from the 18th century, is wide and features flat pilasters and a full Doric entablature, with panelled reveals. The door itself is a 20th-century glazed design with sidelights. Inside, the entrance hall and the linked room on the left have a moulded ceiling cornice, while the other front room features a modillion cornice.
