Treheveras Farmhouse And Adjoining House

Treheveras Farmhouse and an adjoining house date from the late 17th century. The farmhouse is constructed of painted rubble and cob, with render to the front and asbestos cladding to part of a rear wing, likely originally slatehanging. It has asbestos slate roofs with brick chimneys at the gable ends, a hipped-roofed wing to the rear right side, a large external stone stack with a brick shaft on the east wall, and a later lean-to in the north-west angle with a brick chimney against the original rear wall. A further roof sits at a lower level over the adjoining house, which is located to the right (east) of the main farmhouse, also featuring a brick chimney.

The original plan was an irregular "T" shape, with two front rooms serving as a hall and parlour, flanking a wide entrance passage leading to a central stair. It is likely that a kitchen was originally located in the rear wing at a right angle. Around the early 19th century, a kitchen outshut was inserted in the north-west angle, and a further house, two rooms wide, was added to the east, potentially for an extended family; a room from the original farmhouse was incorporated into this new house.

The original south front has a regular arrangement of four windows, while the later house to the right has two. A two-storey lean-to entrance porch contains a wide doorway with a top-glazed panel door and a 20th-century casement window above. Small window openings to the right of the porch are 20th-century insertions. The original house has wide window openings to the left and right of the porch. 20th-century metal windows are present to the right, but an old 20-pane sash window is on the ground floor left, with an early 19th-century 3-light casement above with 6 panes per light. The later house has a 20th-century doorway and window on the ground floor left, but retains original 12-pane 2-light casements above. This south-facing front is actually the rear of the property. The north front is symmetrical, with a central doorway and original 16-pane hornless sashes, except for a 20th-century window on the ground floor right. A rear wing has an early 19th-century hornless sash in the middle, and above it. The lean-to on the right has a doorway on the left, forming a recessed open porch, alongside a ledged door and a 12-pane 2-light casement. The north wall of the wing and lean-to, as well as the return walling, are constructed of thin rubble, likely a facing against studwork, while the left-hand walling is clad in asbestos sheeting.

The interior retains original features, including muntin and plank partitions with alternating heavy and light muntins, a crossbeam and oak joist floor structure to the entrance hall and wing, an L-shaped staircase with a closed string, a square newel with a stepped cap and widely spaced turned balusters, and three 2-panel doors with fielded panels on the first floor. The roof structure has not been inspected but is believed to be original. It is considered one of the least altered 17th-century houses in the area.
