Description

Scawswater Mill is an early 19th-century miller’s house. It is constructed of painted shale rubble, with slate hanging over studwork to the front first floor. The roof is covered in slurried scantle slate, with brick chimneys rising from the gable ends. The plan consists of two equal reception rooms flanking a central cross passage, which leads to a central stairwell between the rear service rooms.

The house presents a symmetrical three-window south front, with a central doorway containing a ledged door. The ground floor openings are arched with brick. The majority of windows are original; the front windows are 16-pane hornless sashes with much crown glass.

The interior retains original carpentry and joinery, including panelled doors, window shutters, and a closed-string dog-leg stair with a moulded mahogany handrail. A large hearth in the rear right-hand room contains a bread oven. A fielded panel door has been relocated at the entrance to the rear left-hand room. The original roof structure has not been inspected. Scawswater Mill is an unspoiled early 19th-century house notable for its attractive original slatehanging and the retention of most of its original windows and glass.
