Description
Lamerton Manor is a house dated 1799, constructed from shale rubble with stone keyed shallow brick arches. It has an asbestos slate roof featuring two hipped roof dormers and brick chimneys on the gable ends, along with lean-to roofs against the right-hand (east) gable end. The layout includes two reception rooms on either side of a wide central passage that leads to a central stair, situated between two large rear service rooms. An additional room has been added to the right (east) of the reception room, and a small room has been added to the right (east) of the rear kitchen.
The house is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window south front, showcasing original 16-pane hornless sashes with much crown glass. The central doorway features an original six-panel door with panelled reveals and remnants of the original doorcase, which includes fluted engaged wooden columns, now partially obscured by a 20th-century classical porch. The roof dormers have 12-pane two-light casements, and there is another 16-pane hornless sash window to the right in the middle of the lean-to.
Inside, the manor retains original six-panel doors, architraves, window shutters, and an open-well open string stair with a wreathed mahogany handrail over the newel. A large fireplace features a grown oak lintel, and the kitchen has slate flags with a large hearth. The lean-to room adjoining the kitchen includes an oven inserted into the back of the kitchen hearth and a stone trough built under the window. A well near the window is covered with a millstone. The back door on the east wall of the lean-to is a reused six-panel door with a fielded panel. The name Lamerton is historic, but it was recently changed to Lamerton Manor, reflecting the original occupants' ownership of much surrounding land and properties. This largely complete late 18th-century house is notable for its original windows.
